I have a bookcase that belonged to my great-great grandfather and would like to use it in my living room, but it's been painted white and doesn't match my decor.
I know for sure that there are three solid coats of white gloss because I painted two of them and watched my father paint one when I was a child. I don't know how many are below that, but I'm told the wood it beautiful.
What is the best way to remove the paint without damaging the piece?
Simply go to a hardware store and look at their paint/furniture stripper products. If you strip with chemical you won't scratch/damage the wood by scraping mechanically. Use rubber gloves so your flesh doesn't come off.
