I work 16 hours on weekends and can't go to Sun. Mass. Does the Church accept Mass attendance on another day?
I would like to adjust my schedule if I could, but I'm in a financial situation that prevents me from much flexibility. I am stuck in this boat. I was thinking of having my wife and I go to Mass on Mondays. A priest at the hospital told me that it is okay to celebrate the Eucharist on another day. However, perhaps another priest would say differently.
Any thoughts folks?
Firstly lets refer to the Catechism of the Catholic Church and see what it says on this matter,
(CCC.2185) On Sundays and other holy days of obligation, the faithful are to refrain from engaging in work or activities that hinder the worship owed to God, the joy proper to the Lord's Day, the performance of the works of mercy, and the appropriate relaxation of mind and body. Family needs or important social service can legitimately excuse from the obligation of Sunday rest, the faithful should see to it that legitimate excuses do not lead to habits prejudicial to religion, family life, and health.
So you see that there are certain genuine reasons for missing Sunday Mass but the fact is that any other Mass (Mon-Sat) does not substitute for Sunday and that particular Priest was wrong to suggest to you that it was okay, the only Mass that covers any Sunday mass is that of the Saturday evening Vigil Mass and it would be better if you could attend this instead.
God bless.
