Is there a dog rescue center in Southern, IL to adopt a pekingese?
My mother just lost her pekingese (Lu- Lu) last month after 15 years of having her and she is just devasted. I have NEVER seen my mother so heart broken. At first, she said she didn't want anothere dog, because no other dog could replace her. Lu-Lu was her secured sense of companionship at home. She had asked me this morning if maybe she should get another dog for the companionship that she is missing. She had Lu-Lu cremated and has her ashes on her fireplace in an urn next to a picture just to show you how she felt about her. I think it may help to fill the void that she feels, so I looked for a pet rescue center and can't find one. She said she would like to have another pekingese but would also take a tshih-zuh because they are related.
Are you aware of any rescue centers in Monroe County, Illinois or do you know of any websites that I can look into?
I appreciate any information you could provide.
There are lots of rescue groups out there and lots of pups needing forever homes (especially if you are willing to travel a few hours). Petfinder.com is a good place to start...but here are some others:

http://www.pcfinc.org/
Also, it will be a bit of a drive...but there is a wonderful association called Happy Tails Animal Sanctuary in Columbia Mo. Right now they have a Purebred 2 year old ShihTzu available for adoption. These guys are amazing--I adopted my last puppy from them and I can't rave about them enough. Anyway, check out their site:

These are just a few out there. Also, check you local shelters and pounds. You'd be surprised what is there and how desperate these guys need a new home.
Good luck and my heart goes out to your mother. I know how deeply the loss of you pet can be. We lost one of our Yorkies 2 years ago November 14. Buster is forever in our hearts...just like the plaque on his urn says (which is also sitting on our mantle).
