Why do public schools almost demand children to stand in allegiance to the flag?
I love my country, but to stand in allegiance to anything means to praise or worship that thing. We've totally denied our kids the right to pray in schools, whether it be God, Allah, etc. Any comments?
I just want people to know that I am a VERY proud daughter of a disabled vietnam vet. Some people need to check the basic dictionary for the definition of allegiance..Webster dictionary, devotion, faithfulness, fidelity, etc. It seems that I'm not the only one who's ignorant on some subjects.
The United States started a public school system a little over 100 years ago under the theory that a well educated population is a population that is more stable and more involved with civic affairs, hence a more democratic people.
Our country is founded on freedom of religion, so a government run institution like a school district cannot teach to one religion or another.
Honoring our flag is a great idea...All our kids in our schools should be American citizens...and teaching patriotism is a good thing. It creates a population that supports the idea of America.
