Should religious schools be denied government funding?
seeing as how the government has already sided with the secular ideals of removing prayer and religion from the public school system.... why should religious parents have to pay extra for their child to be educated?
is it fair that a secular child, should receive government funding and get special treatment, but the religious child has to pay out of pocket for the same opportunities?
where is the government in supporting the right to pursue happiness in the case of the believer?
Several states have tried to pass charter school laws or tuition certificate laws, basically the idea is that you figure out how much the public school costs per year per student, then each private school (regardless of religion, any private school) would get that much money for each student.
Its a great system in my opinion because it would create competition between schools. If public schools suck, private schools would pop up more easily and it would force public schools to be more financially responsible.
The problem is that people argue that it will take money away from public schools. While this is true, its not really a good argument. The public schools would get just as much per student as the private schools. With the way it is right now, public schools get funding for students that go to private school.
Here's another arguement for public funding of private schools: everyone pays property tax to fund education. If you own a house, you pay property tax. If you rent, the owner of the property pays property taxes with the rent money they collect from you. So why should people be forced to pay for their childs education by both property tax and private school tuition.
You might argue that this is a personal choice, nobody is forcing you to pay private school tuition. But I would counter by saying, you're right, it is a choice. Don't you want an education system that provides more choices to parents and students? Don't you think it would be better if a students choice of school wasn't limited by their parents income?
Also, this system would have nothing to do with religion. All private schools would qualify (provided they are certified by the state board of education). There are many private schools out there that have no religious affiliation, and there would be many more if parents didn't have to pay $5,000 per year or more to send their kids there.
