Should prayer requests be worthy of a violation notice?
On a consistent basis we see prayer requests on the R&S forum. Usually, they receive a violation notice and get removed? Since it's often one of the few times that the forum pulls together instead of fighting, should the Yamster allow Prayer requests to be considered a valid question?
Several people have pointed out that a prayer request is not a question and so it violates the terms of use.
Some say that the questions posed have to be open to all.
I can agree with the first view, but I have trouble with the second.
Suppose someone were to post the following:
"My father regularly hits my mother with a rolled up newspaper. Sometimes it is done in a semi playful way, sometimes it doesn't seem to be.
Should I pray to God to make his elbow so sore he can't do that anymore, Or
Should I pray to God to make my father see that what he is doing is wrong?"
I don't think an answer to the question can ignore this sort of scenario. And this means that whether such a question is allowed, or whether it should be allowed, is going unasked in the background.
If the community agrees that some change is warranted then the members who feel that way ought to make the suggestion; there is a mechanism for that.
I think the practice of prohibiting rayer requests makes the ask-answer feature less human. Since this is a public venue, it may even violate the constitutional protection of free speech, at least for US citizens. I believe it has been ruled that no one can bar the public from public speech on religion in the public square. I think the view is that the right of free speech is a charade if it doesn't include prayer.
